Osteopathy Treatment: Everything You Need to Know

As someone who has tried all other avenues and is still seeking relief from pain or discomfort, you may have come across the term “osteopathy”, but aren’t quite sure what it involves.  In this blog post, we’ll explore what osteopathy is and how it works, the benefits of receiving osteopathic treatment, and what to expect during your first appointment.

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a gentle form of manual therapy that helps facilitate the natural self-healing and self-regulating processes of the body.  The goal is to free the nerves, arteries, veins, and lymphatic systems of restrictions caused by your hard and soft tissues (fascia, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and bones).  Osteopathy uses gentle manipulation to re-align the structures of your body to aid in the healing process.

How Does Osteopathy Work?

Osteopathy aims to treat the body as a whole, rather than treating specific symptoms, which makes it an excellent option for clients seeking more of a holistic approach to their treatment.  One of the main principles of osteopathy is the belief that the body has a natural ability to self-heal and self-regulate, and osteopathic manual practitioners work with the body’s structure to facilitate this process.

By manipulating the body’s tissues and improving mobility and blood flow, osteopathy can aid the self-healing process and provide long-lasting relief from pain and discomfort.  Osteopathic treatment can address several musculoskeletal conditions, including acute and/or chronic pain, back and neck pain, sciatica, headaches, sports injuries, and more.

What Are the Benefits of Osteopathy?

Osteopathy offers a wide range of benefits, including the following:

Non-Invasive: Osteopathy treatment is non-invasive, which means it has none of the potential risks or complications associated with surgery or other invasive procedures.
Improved Range of Motion: Osteopathic treatment may aid to improve the range of motion of the joints and muscles, and can help alleviate stiffness associated with injury or disuse.
Reduced Pain: By facilitating the natural healing process of the body, osteopathy can lead to a significant reduction in pain associated with musculoskeletal conditions.
Whole Body Treatment: Osteopathy treatment addresses the whole body and works to treat the root cause of the problem, which can provide longer-lasting relief.

What to Expect During Your First Osteopathy Appointment

During your first appointment your health history will be reviewed and your goals of treatment will be discussed. A global assessment of range of motion and mobility will then take place, and treatment of primary global restrictions will be provided.  At the end of the assessment a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs will be discussed and created.

If you have tried all other avenues and are still seeking relief, or want to incorporate another therapy into your healthcare routine, osteopathy is a great option!  The combination of principle based hands-on techniques and whole-body treatment is an effective way to promote healing and provide relief from pain and discomfort.  If you are interested in osteopathic treatment, we are taking appointments every Monday-Wednesday, & Saturdays!
