Is Chiropractic Care right for me?

A common assumption is that chiropractic treatment is a whole lot of cracking, but chiropractic treatment explores the various types of injuries and conditions that can stem from the neuromusculoskeletal system in the human body. These types of injuries can vary, from a simple strain to a damaged structure, such as a disc, tendon, or ligament. Chiropractors are not only able to diagnose, but are also able to treat these conditions within their scope of practice. Chiropractors are primarily trained to offer a technique called spinal manipulation, which is a high-velocity, low-amplitude thrust technique that targets joints of limited movement and range. The technique itself has been shown, over years of scientific research, to help lower pain levels, as well as, restore these ranges of motion. It does not always mean that every patient should receive spinal manipulation as there are alternate forms of treatment chiropractors can perform. A milder version, often in a low-velocity, low-amplitude technique, called mobilization can also be effective. As well as, soft tissue therapy and rehabilitation protocols to empower patients to establish a self-management strategy for long term recovery. Most importantly, patients always have the right to choose which treatment they are comfortable with and it is important that they have this choice.

A misconception surrounding chiropractors is that they are only trained to treat conditions related to the human spine. This is not the case- ANY type of joint and their associated structures can be diagnosed and treated, such as, the shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, wrist and jaw. Certain chiropractors have unique skill sets, such as acupuncture or activator services, that can also serve as an alternative option.

At your initial assessment, a thorough history and physical examination is performed to become familiar with each individual's unique case, while determining the root cause of the problem(s). Consequently, a thorough conversation based on the examination will be mutually held to discuss what treatment options are appropriate, with respect to both the practitioner’s recommendation and the patient’s preference. For any other advice or questions, speak to your chiropractic doctor.
